Early Intervention for Kids with Autism, ADHD, and Other Support Needs

Don’t wait…

When it comes to supporting kids with autism, ADHD, or other developmental challenges, early intervention is key. This refers to providing services and support to kids as soon as possible after they are identified as having a developmental delay or disability.

The earlier these services are received, the better the outcomes!

Why is Early Intervention so Important?

  • Foundation for Future Success: Early intervention helps kids develop the skills they need to be successful in school and in life.  Develop skills now for greater success later!

  • Individualized Support: It allows for the creation of personalized plans (both IEPs and 504 Plans) that address unique needs and strengths.

  • Preventative Measures: Early intervention can help prevent secondary disabilities that may arise if support is delayed.

  • Improved Quality of Life: By receiving appropriate support early on, kids can experience a better quality of life and have more opportunities for success.

My Little Friend Mara

Mara, a six-year-old autistic kiddo, is an awesome example of the benefits of early intervention. As a kindergartener, Mara's teachers noticed that she was struggling to stay focused and participate in classroom activities. She had a hard time with social skills and her ability to communicate was certainly a struggle as well.

Mara's mom, Sarah, was also aware of her daughter's challenges. She had been advocating for Mara's needs since her diagnosis and was grateful for the support she was receiving from Mara's school. Together, Sarah and Mara's teachers began to discuss strategies to help Mara thrive in the classroom.

And there was A LOT of problem-solving!

Sarah and other members of the IEP team developed an IEP that included accommodations, such as giving assignments in “smaller chunks”, using a timer for focus and visual supports to help Mara stay organized. They also worked on social skills and communication strategies that would help Mara interact more effectively with her peers.

Thanks to early intervention (and awesome communication between all members of the IEP team!), Mara has made significant progress. She is now able to participate fully in class, communicate her needs effectively, and build friendships with her classmates. Her mom is incredibly grateful for the support she has received from Mara's teachers and the early intervention services that have helped her daughter reach her full potential.

So for Mara, the foundation has been set.  Accommodations and strategies for success are in place.  Now, that’s a win!

As parents of children with autism, ADHD, or other support needs, it's important to advocate for early intervention.  Please don’t wait.  By seeking out these services, you can help your child develop the skills they need to succeed and live a fulfilling life.

A treatment method or an educational method that will work for one child may not work for another child. The one common denominator for all of the young children is that early intervention does work, and it seems to improve the prognosis. ~Temple Grandin
